Could you be the next Bees' Needs Farming Champion?

Championing the Farmed Environment are pleased to announce that the Year of Green Action Bees’ Needs Awards will include a category dedicated to recognising the good work of farmers in supporting healthy populations of pollinators in our farmed environment.

Following Bees’ Needs Week in July and as part of the 2019 Year of Green Action, the Bees’ Needs Awards recognise the efforts of individuals, groups and businesses who encourage and increase pollinator friendly habitats.

In previous years activity on farmland has been recognised alongside parks and green spaces that have done something amazing for pollinators. However, 2019 is the first year that farming has been offered its own category. This is a great opportunity to champion the work of our farmers in protecting and enhancing the environment and we are keen to support applications from the farming community.

Entries for the award are open to all who care for or create pollinator friendly habitats and / or food sources on their land.

Criteria which will be taken into account by the judging panel include:

  • Dedication to supporting pollinators
  • Innovation and creativity
  • Promotion to others / awareness raising of Bees’ Needs
  • Evidence of beneficial impact to pollinators

Activities linked to agri-environment funding will be considered, but the nomination should describe how a farmer or land manager has demonstrated commitment to benefiting pollinators beyond the prescription of their funded activity.

Winners will be invited to an award ceremony in London November during the 3rd week in November; exact date to be confirmed soon.

Bees’ Needs Champions Awards 2018

The annual Bees’ Needs Champions Awards took place at Kew Gardens on November 13th 2018, where Lord Gardiner, Minister for Rural Affairs and Biosecurity, presented awards to 22 of our 27 winners, who have all done tremendous work to help save and raise awareness about pollinators. Huw Merriman MP gave a keynote speech on the importance of pollinators and the All Party Parliamentary Group for Bees’ work to save them, followed by presentations by our partners about their projects.
