Give pollinators and farmland birds a helping hand - 3 discounted seed mixes available

Last updated: 03 Jan 2018

Thanks to the continuing support of Kings, Syngenta and Limagrain, three discounted seed mixes are available to support a range of pollinators, beneficial insects and farmland birds. Request your unique voucher code by emailing [email protected].

Why sow these mixes?

These mixes can be used to enhance EFA fallow land (see more about changes to Greening in 2018), your least productive, awkward field corners and margins. Providing food for pollinators can also enhance yields by benefiting crop pollination and natural enemies of certain crop pests. Sowing these mixes is also a highly visible way to show how your farm is making an effort for wildlife, especially when planted near a footpath. They can be rotated around your farm, and can also benefit game birds.

Operational Pollinator Annual Flower Mix

This mix of crimson clover, red clover, phacelia, native corn flower and native corn marigold and native corn chamomile can be purchased for £35 for a 4kg pack of seed (sows up to a hectare).

Suitable for most soil types, it is ideally planted in the autumn at a similar time to oilseed rape. It is designed to have a long flowering season, from the end of OSR before many perennials into October. It requires no in-season management and as an annual, it can be easily rotated around your farm.

Operational Pollinator ‘Bees & Seeds’ Mix

This mix provides later season pollen and nectar and then plenty of seeds to feed suitable for many bird species through the winter up to March, the ‘hungry gap’. It also provides an ideal canopy for game birds and will complement game cover crops.

A 20kg pack costs £50 (covers up to a hectare), and is best sown from May to mid-July. The mix contains Kale rape, phacelia, fodder radish, brown mustard, mustard, buckwheat, gold of pleasure and sunflower.

CFE Field Margin Mix

This mix enhances buffer strips and margins and contains UK native wildflowers. As well as benefiting pollinators, it also creates ideal nesting habitat for farmland birds. This mix should last at least 5 years.

A 4kg pack costs £45 (RRP £54). This is a mix of 13 species: smooth Stalked Meadow Grass, Rough Stalked Meadow Grass, Timothy, Tall Fescue, Sheeps Fescue, Crested Dogstail, White Clover, Birdsfoot Trefoil, Yellow Rattle. Lesser Knapweed, Chewings Fescue, Common Bent, Red Clover.

To order, please contact Vicki Winton (Limagrain UK Limited) on 01472 370105 or [email protected].
