CFE celebrates a successful 2016/17

Last updated: 09 May 2017

Looking back over the last 12 months, it’s clear that CFE has achieved a considerable amount. CFE’s seven regional teams have successfully engaged over 1475 farmers and land managers at over 80 CFE-led farm walks, plus countless more through attending partnership events. The feedback has been fantastic and we’ve very pleased to share some highlights.

In the last year, CFE events have focused on supporting pollinators (May to June 2016), improving water quality (October and November) and most recently, protecting farmland birds (January to March 2017).

Fantastic feedback

After compiling all the feedback from nearly a thousand attendees, some key figures stand out:

  • 76% thought the knowledge of the speakers at events was ‘Excellent’
  • 90% planned to change the management on their farms following the event
  • 100% would recommend a CFE event to another farmer.

There are plenty of further indicators that the guidance CFE provides is proving consistently, high-quality relevant to farmers and land managers. The information given on managing hedges and margins for pollinators, understanding farmland bird habitats, and protecting water quality was thought to be ‘very helpful’ by 85% of attendees at the respective events.

More than farm walks

In addition to CFE-led events, CFE co-ordinators presented CFE messages at around 50 relevant, ‘partnership’ events and had stands at a further 28, reaching new audiences. Over 100 farmer-led Local Liaison Groups were also convened with local interested parties, such as wildlife groups, to steer CFE activity locally.

In the last year, CFE have also worked closely with partners to introduce new guidance on conserving turtle doves and on maintaining bathing water quality. Guidance for grassland farmers has also been updated.

Future plans

All of this has been achieved in the context of reduced Defra funding contribution and a changed model for local delivery. The excellent feedback received is testament to the expertise and ongoing commitment of CFE’s regional co-ordinators, local supporters and partners.

In the year ahead, we will be exploring new ways of working with industry sponsors, always aiming to maximise CFE’s impact and deliver high-quality guidance on environmental best practice for farmers, growers, land managers and advisers.
